Competition info & rules

It is assumed coaches, managers and parents understand rules and guidelines within the current handbook at the commencement of each season.

Below is a summary of some of our competition rules, guidelines and policies. For a copy of the Junior Handbook – please go to the Policies and Documents section.

Competition information - things to know before the season starts

Season fixtures and results can be viewed on PlayHQ. Our competition is played at two venues: Warwick Stadium and Stirling Leisure Mirrabooka.

Each team is responsible for ensuring they arrive on time to each game and have a parent assigned to the score bench (one from each team).

All players are expected to be in a matching uniform. This includes a jersey, basketball shorts and adequate sporting attire (shoes, socks). A number (0-99) is required on the front and back of the jersey.

Warwick Senators highly recommends that mouthguards be worn by all our basketball players.

If your team is unable to attend a game, forfeits need to be submitted via the Teampay app. Forfeit fine do apply (see the handbook for more details).

If you have a concern during your game, ask your manager (or another parent) to request the Referee Supervisor view the game.

Pathway for those who have done the Aussie Hoops program.

Our under 8’s competition is available on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.

This is a coach led division with the first 25 minutes a skills/game based development program and the second 28 minutes a coach refereed game of two 14 minute halves.

On game day, those attending and/or playing at Warwick Stadium are expected to behave in a respectful manner towards all other players, spectators, referees and officials.

Remember it’s not the NBL and the behaviours seen on TV are not appropriate for junior basketball.

Warwick Senators reserves the right to instruct (eject) any coach, manager, player, parent or spectator to immediately leave the venue. These guidelines are in line with ‘Conditions of Entry’ to Warwick Stadium, BWA Codes of Conduct policy document and by-laws in our competition handbooks.

If you have any issues during your game about the behaviour/actions of another person or player, ask your manager (or another parent) to request the Referee Supervisor attend your court.

We urge all parents and guardians to read our Junior handbook. Click here to view.

It is the responsibility of all coaches, managers and parents to be aware of the competition rules outlined in our handbook. Warwick Senators reserve the right to amend or introduce bylaws during a season if necessary.

If you require clarification on any rule please email comps@warwicksenators.com.au

Junior players incur a season fee of $240 to register to their team. This does not include any yearly Basketball WA or Basketball Australia charges. All fees are payable via PlayHQ.

A non-refundable fee of $35 is required at the time of registering a team to our junior competition. A link is then generated via PlayHQ for players to use to join that team.

We require teams to have a minimum of 7 players (for U8s, U10s, U12s, U14s) or 6 players (for U16s, U18s) registered prior to the season commencing.

When registering through PlayHQ payment instalment options are available. Warwick Senators are also a KidSport approved club.

The player fees contribute towards the running of one of the largest domestic junior basketball competitions in WA.

Fees remain consistent across our Summer and Winter seasons. It is based on an average number of rounds, but may vary due to byes and division structure.

As a not-for-profit, we invest these fee’s into the expenses related to the competition and ensure sustainability of our facilities.

This includes:

  • Referee development program
  • Employing suitable staff to manage the operations of the competition and the stadium
  • Hire other venues for competition purposes
  • Maintain and invest in the facilities to ensure we can provide quality spaces and we can meet our lease obligations to council

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a quick summary of some of the common questions we are asked. Further explanations are provided in the Junior handbook which can be found under our Policies and Documents section.

Warwick Senators are a KidSport club/association.

If your child is 5 to 18 years old and listed on a health care card or pensioner concession card, you may be eligible for a KidSport voucher to help cover the cost of player fees.

Find out more and apply at www.cits.wa.gov.au/kidsport

Please note, applications can take up to 3 weeks to be approved.

Warwick Senators strongly discourages the use of fill ins except where absolutely necessary.

A fill in can only play for a team twice. After this they should register as a player for that team.

On game day, teams are allowed up to TWO fill ins, to form a team of six players.  For example, teams with:

  • 6 or more registered players, no fill ins allowed.
  • 5 registered players, will be allowed 1 fill in.
  • 4 registered players, will be allowed 2 fill ins.
  • 3 registered players, will be allowed 2 fill ins.

Fill ins must have their full name registered on the tablet in PlayHQ with a fill in ticket purchased at Reception (or via Teampay) for $15.

Failure to comply, could mean the player is not covered by BWA insurance in the event of an injury on court. Your team may also be issued with a 0-20 loss.

Forfeit fines are in place to discourage forfeiting and provide teams with the opportunity to play as many games as possible in a season.

All forfeits need to be made through the Teampay app. This ensures the other team is notified about the cancelled game. Each team will be provided with a code at the start of the season to set up your team on the app.

The assigned forfeit fine can be paid when you forfeit and can be distributed amongst the players/parents who are signed up to the app.

If not paid on the day you forfeit, fines need to be paid within 30 days or an automatic forfeit will apply to the next upcoming round.

After three forfeits in a season the Competitions team may contact you to discuss your continuation in the competition.

Warwick Senators, alongside Basketball WA, is committed to improving the health of its players and coaches through safe participation in sport and physical activity.

To our junior and senior domestic players, your teeth are just as precious as anyone else’s. Dental injuries are the most common type of oral facial injury in sport. They can keep players out of sport for a significant amount of time and often prove costly.

Warwick Senators strongly encourages and supports the use of mouthguards across all ages within our domestic competitions. This support is in line with the strategies and initiatives of SportSafe and Basketball WA in promoting better attitudes towards safety in sports, and in particular, basketball.

In line with Basketball WA, mouthguards are mandatory for all players under the age of 18 years competing in the Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) and all State team representatives.

Mouthguards can be custom-made or purchased from a chemist/sport store and fitted at home.

Late registrations are accepted, however, the player registration fee remains the same until halfway through the junior season.

The registration fee is setup to reward players who register pre-season by giving them the opportunity to play in every round.

Player registrations close the week prior to the final six (6) rounds of the season to ensure the player is eligible for finals.

Please contact the Competitions team via email with the relevant medical note and we will arrange a partial refund based on the games you are unable to play.

Please note, we are unable to refund fees paid via PlayHQ to external organisations such as BWA or Basketball Australia.

We have our Referee Supervisor and Referee Coaches monitoring games. If you have a concern on the day, please speak to the Referee Coordinator first.

If you would like to protest an outcome or lodge a grievance, please complete the following form – Domestic Grievance.

To create a balanced and competitive competition, teams in our Friday’s night division 1 are permitted to have up to seven (7) WABL/Restricted players. All other competitions on other days are only allowed to have up to three (3).

This is to provide a competitive competition for WABL players to play domestically whilst not creating ‘super teams’ in other competitions.

Please note, only players from the top three (3) WABL teams from any given association are classified as restricted. Development players are not classified as restricted. Refer to our Junior Handbook for more details.
